Today we traveled by train from Verona to Bolzano (near the Austrian border). We arrived hours before we were allowed to check in to our hotel, so we called a known local guide (Alex) to see if we could visit the famous Dolomites view within the "Val di Funes" and visit nearby St. Magdelena Church for the afternoon.
Chris can't help himself, but to use any gadget around...even to take in breathtaking views.
Our guide explained to us that the Dolomites were originally a coral reef that expanded as ocean levels changed and he showed us fossils of marine shells. Very cool.
This picture is of the Dolomites from the view of the Val di Funes with St. Magdelena church in the foreground. Because of tourist overcrowding, the lane by which you can access this view is no longer open to vehicles, so we spent the better part of an hour hiking to the church and then beyond to capture a picture of them both.
This is a photo of inside St. Magdelena Church. It is a very small church within a very small farming community that is made up of German, Austrian, Swiss and Italian ancestry...their culture is a mash up of this combination.
A big hike deserves a BIG beer! :-)
A sweet evening walk in historic downtown Bolzano.
