Today is Chris's birthday...he's 29! 🤔 Today was an early start, as we had a hot air balloon to catch! We walked through a very early and sleepy town of Assisi to catch our ride.
About 30 minutes out of Assisi we arrived in a field, crew hard at work prepping the balloon. We met Captain Peter who gave us a few short safety instructions, then we jumped aboard (I use this term lightly as the basket was very high...so it was more of an team effort of pull, tug and push). The lift off was very smooth and the weather cleared beautifully. Mostly blue skies and almost no wind. We were taken to a top altitude of about 5,000 ft (but Chris and I agree...the best views are down lower). Very pretty valley and we sailed the bright blue sky for over a hour and then make a smooth landing in another field. They took us to a local winery for some munchies and wine tasting, not exactly a hard way to celebrate a birthday.
We were returned to our car and said one last goodbye to Basilica di San Francesco & Assisi and headed down the hill to Santa Maria degli Angeli (town and church). This church is what houses the small first chapel that St. Francesco built. We could not go in as Mass was being held, but I managed to get a photo of the chapel, there is also a design of it in the square in front of the church.
