Normandy Beaches, France - Dad/Sandy

Our ship docked at La Havre, France.  We headed inland to Paris while Dad/Sandy headed down the coast to the Normandy region to visit the Allied landing beaches of WWII.  Both of us faced a 10+ hour day.  Knowing that today was going to be a long one, Dad decided to get his nap in early. French countryside and waterways are beautiful.

Rest stop in the town of Caen (pronounced cone).  Multiple fancy coffee vending machines, mini grocery store, pastries and a restaurant. Arriving at the town of Arromanches-Les-Bain we visited the D-Day Museum.

Lunch of Salad, Bread, Wine, Chicken w/Potatoes and Tartlett at                                    Hotel De Normandie built in 1875.

After lunch they walked through town down to Gold Beach, one of the 5 Allied landing beach sites.  5 sites east to west- Sword beach, Juno Beach, Gold Beach, Omaha Beach, Utah Beach.

Transportation, Artillary and Ice Cream?

I wasn't with Dad/Sandy on this tour so sometimes I don't understand the photo's I'm seeing while creating this blog.  When I saw the truck on the left I saw the sign above it and translated it to English...it said Ice Cream- so I'm thinking...seriously? an Ice Cream Truck?  Well no, upon closer inspection I realized the sign was on the building behind it.

Next stop Tracy-sur-Mer, a War cemetary.

Heading toward Omaha beach we stopped at the Normandy American Cemetery

14,000 American bodies shipped back home, 9,800 Americans buried here, including 3 generals and Teddy Roosevelts brothers.  There are 150 stars of David in this cemetery.
