Vatican City, this will be the 4th country we have visited on this trip 1) Switzerland 2) Italy 3) San Marino 4) Vatican City.
I've just about run out of words to describe these churches. How many ways can I say "big" "beautiful" "unique". Yet here I am again in a big, beautiful and unique church. Chris volunteered to stand in front to give you some perspective. I think St. Peter's Basilica is the largest in the world. It has more ceiling domes than I have ever seen and the artwork is astounding.
Michelangelo's Pieta is so incredibly life like. Bernini's canopy and dove sun window are one of a kind. The huge oil paintings on the wall, are not paintings at all, but recreations of the originals...but done is mosaics to preserve the colors!
The Swiss Guard were kind enough to pose for a picture. And a cheerful early morning selfie from your friendly travelers!
An angel without wings...yeah right! 🤪
This roman ruin is called Largo di Torres Argentina. They have discovered 4 Roman temples and are currently constructing walkways for the public to be able to explore this ruin. However, for many many years wild cats have lived in here...making it one of the largest litter boxes in the world! A local humane society has been set up to give health care, and shelter to some 350 cats that live in this area so they can remain free.
I had more to post from today, but there has been a glitch in the website. Hopefully it will be back up in a day or two and I can finish today's post.
Until then, goodnight from Rome.
Continued: This church below is Chiesa dei Gesu, or the main church of the Jesuit order. We were amazed at the amount of sculptures hanging from the ceiling...I can't begin to imagine just what one of them must weigh! We also saw a woman doing restoration to a painting. We have seen lots of cleaning and repairs done to buildings, but never the delicate work of art restoration.
We went out to a local restaurant for a light dinner, caprese salad, a bowl of pasta and I had the Italian version of hot chocolate. It is not sweet like we are used to, more like liquid dark chocolate and is very thick...kind of like pudding before it sets up. Oh, so so good.
