Welcome to Sorrento (just south of, and across the bay from, Naples).  We left Rome by bus and had a very entertaining ride south.  Our driver was very talented as he handled hairpin turns and narrow streets I wouldn't even dare attempt. He was also very impatient.  He didn't hesitate to use his horn or yell at someone he thought was going too slow and spent a good deal of our 4 1/2 hour journey mumbling under his breath...pretty sure I heard a couple of "bastardo"s littered in his speech!

Our hotel is perched on a cliff side and has a very pretty night view of the city all lit up.

From our balcony this morning we had a direct view of Mt. Vesuvius and the charming waterfront directly below us.  I am sure the mountain will look a lot more intimidating when we get up close later this week.

Jeanette this is for you-

We passed this lounge on the way to breakfast this morning, and the colors were so bright and vivid...it reminded us of you

After breakfast, we took a hike down the hill to the historic center of town.  The main street was pedestrian-only and very charming, with colorful buildings, interesting shops and churches.

Isabella- this is for you.

I went into a pastry/sandwich shop.  A young girl had chosen a doughnut and the woman behind the counter pushed the doughnut onto this nozzle of a HUGE Nutella jar (about the size of a 5 gallon paint bucket) and filled the doughnut for her.   The girl was very happy and was licking the chocolate spread off her lips.  I remember when you were much younger and you loved Nutella so much.  This made me think of you.

Do you still like Nutella?  Italians seem to love it, I see it everywhere...even on menus in restaurants! :)

Chris and I had seen an episode  of Rick Steves' show where he walks through a lemon garden that had formed a canopy.  It was so pretty we looked it up and went to find it.  It was very pretty, but this must not be the season for lemons, as they were all green and looked more like limes!

Because Sorrento is built on a cliff, it is not an easy task to reach the water's edge.  We descended many stairs and a few narrow roads to find the ferry dock, as we hope to visit the island of Capri sometime this week.  The views were worth the walk.  We had a nice seafood lunch at the water's edge and then strolled the sea wall a bit.  I saw these changing rooms and thought how funny...I haven't seen anything like that since the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.  Then we discovered there was an elevator back to the top!!!  We probably needed the exercise anyway!
