Research on the Vatican Museums told us that there is about 4 miles of art so decided to break our visit into 2 days.
Day 1-
Started early to avoid the big crowds. If you plan on visiting know that from the street to the 1st exhibition hall is roughly the same from the parking lot at Disney World to its front gates and generally they do not provide places to sit down and rest inside. So wear comfy shoes and prepare for sore feet.
We took the short cut to the Sistine Chapel (about 1.5 miles with lots of stairs), thru the tapestry corridor, the map corridor, and past rooms of enormous paintings.
We eventually made it to the Sistine Chapel. Absolutely no photography allowed, so the picture below is of a post card I purchased and photographed. While the details and colors are vivid, the room is also quite a bit smaller than we had imagined, including the painting of "The Creation" (finger of God to man).
I took a few photos of the Vatican gardens from the museum's 2nd story windows and then we made our way out to one of the several courtyards within the museum to have lunch on a bench. Rain drove us back inside after a bit. We suprisingly found rooms with art treasures from Rodin and Van Gogh. On our way out we found a 3D model of Vatican city that was pretty cool and helped us make sense of direction within the grounds. It is pretty much a maze and you can get lost in a hurry.
There is much more to see, but not today!
