While we are staying in the Tuscan region, we've made a list of places to take day trips to see (hopefully being able to combine several in a common area to cover more ground). Today we split our day between Civita di Bagnoregio (a 13th century walled town built by the Etruscans) and Lago di Bolsena (the largest volcanic lake in Europe).
Civita di Bagnoregio sits upon a rapidly eroding foundation, so has been named the "the dying city". In 1993 they put in a reinforced pedestrian bridge and banned all motorized vehicles to help slow the erosion. There are only 16 citizens who live in the city. I now speak from 1st hand experience that those 16 individuals must be very, very fit. To reach Civita di Bagnoregio you must drive to the newer town of Bagnoregio, find parking, board a tourist bus which takes you near the pedestrian bridge, buy a ticket to enter the city (10 Euro's) and then hike...uphill about 1/2 mile (and despite science saying otherwise) the walk back was also uphill! No question we got our cardio in today...its fairly impressive what I can do when I put my mind to something. 🙃 We visited the town's 1 church, walked the perimeter and then had a nice lunch of stuffed zucchini flowers, cantaloup w/proscuitto, and grilled chicken...Sorry Annie, so hungry forgot to take photo's!!!
A side note to any movie buffs. The 1986 Sean Connery film "In the name of the rose", some of the exterior shots were Civita di Bagnoregio. This is one of Chris's favorite movies...so to visit was a nice bonus.
The 1st photo below is prior to the hike...see how happy we are? 🤪
Next we headed to Lago di Bolsena, collected some black volcanic sand and marveled at the size of this lake. Today we traveled through the Tuscany, Umbrian and Lazio regions. At the end of our day and traveling to our lodgings we happen to notice this beautiful wallet ancient city. This last picture is Orvieto..we have now added it to our list. Honestly these ancient walled cities are everywhere we look, some big-some small... but always beautiful, full of history and culture and very very charming. A quick stop for gelato tonight and then a quiet evening of blogging and planning our next day trip. Night all.
